Getting Started with Wordpress

Wordpress is by far the best blog platform that you will use. While it is true there are many other blogging tools, if you really want to establish yourself online and make money. Wordpress is the platform of choice.

Why?

As an open source platform you have access to 100’s of free themes for your site.  You also get literally thousands of free plugins. Plugins are additions to the platfrom that enhance the blog and the user experience.

Further wordpress is a state of the art platform, if you check out their website you will notice that companies such as The New York Times and CNN use wordpress as their prefered blog platform.

Let me tell you a secret, you can also blog from your iphone!  For someone that stuggled to make money as a PPC affiliate with iPhone offers, this is totally the best aspect.  I can update my blogs from anywhere just on my iPhone.  I blog on the train, at the airport, on the beach, anywhere I want to add to my income with the right message and information.  I am always in contact with my readers.

So you are ready to start a blog.  Keep in mind that you need to know what your passion is as you may  struggle to produce the content and longevity to keep blogging to make money.

First, you need to register a domain name. That’s the easy part. There are plenty of domain registrars out there. I personally use Planetdomiain simple to use and straight forward.

Now, I don’t however use their hosting services, I use Hostgator for the reason you get, unlimited disk, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited number of websites, which is very important if you find yourself with an online empire.  Finally, get FileZilla, this is a free FTP program that you will need to upload wordpress themes and other things, like plug-ins and widgets to your site.

Now that you have everything set up simply log into your hosting account and access your sites cPanel.  Within cPanel there is a tool called Fantastico, this is a utility that has a lot of scripts that you can install for your webiste such as ecommerce, forums etc.  But the one we want is Wordpress.

You will see a lot of options, don’t let that worry you, Wordpress with be under ‘blogs’ usually under the second header.  You simply need to click on Wordpress and then ‘New Installation’.  Complete all the details, enusre that you remember your admin name and password, you will need to to log into worpress admin area to post to your blog etc.

Install Wordpress

Your blog is now up and running!  I strongly recommend that you do the following straight away.

Log into the admin area and delete the “Hello World” post and any other posts/ comments wordpress installs. You simply go to Manage and then posts and delete.
Then go to Manage and Pages and click on ‘About’.  Change the about information to your own.
Head over to wordpress.org and click on the menu item ‘extend’ and then ‘themes’.  Select from one of the many free themes that you like download extract. 
Open Filezilla, put in your FTP details and upload your new theme.  Note that the file path is. Public_html ->wp-content -> themes.   You simply drag your downloaded and unziped theme folder into the themes directory as per below.

Now that you have uploaded your selected theme, you go to your admin dashboard to install wordpress themes.

Directory strucutre of Wordpress Themes

Your next step is quite simple.  Head to your wp-admin page of your site, in the structure: www.yoursitename.com/wp-admin You will get a page the same as below

Wordpress Log in Page

Log in with the username and password that you set-up during the wordpress installation.  This will take you into the Wordpress Blog Dashboard.  This is the dashboard of my Melbourne Cup site.

Click on ‘Apperance’ on the right hand side.  This will open up the Manage Themes page automatically

Here you will see a complete selection of the themes that you have upload, as well as the default Wordpress Themes that you can use on your blog site.  Simply click a theme will open a new window that provides a preview of what you site will look like with that theme.

You then simply need to ‘activite’ that theme to make it yours.  The activate button is on the top right-hand side.

There, you are done and can start to blog away and start to generate traffic.  There is a lot more to using wordpress then simply posting.  There are a lot of plug-ins that really enhance your site and can add a lot to user experience, everything from social bookmarking tools, automatically insert adsense to postings and many more.
